StoryLingo

A listening-first language app

Learn by listening.
Never by translating.

StoryLingo teaches a language the way you learned your first one — through short stories you hear, understand, and answer out loud. No native-language glosses, no flashcards, no translation drills. Built on TPRS and Effortless English, rebuilt around stories from this week's news.

How it works

01

A story from this week's news

Every lesson is a short story written in your target language, based on something that actually happened this week. No canned dialogues from 1998.

02

Told naturally. No translation, ever.

A native voice tells you the story. New words are explained in the same language using simpler words. Your first language never shows up in the lesson, because it has no job there.

03

The 3-second pause.

You hear a question. Then three seconds of silence — just long enough to force an answer out of your mouth before your brain has time to translate. That pause is the product.

Launching in

  • English

For learners whose first language is not English.

  • Vietnamese

For English speakers in or moving to Vietnam.

More languages will follow once the method proves out in these two.

The method isn't new.

Based on TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling, Blaine Ray) and the Effortless English lesson structure (AJ Hoge). Both have taught millions of learners to speak a second language without translating in their heads. StoryLingo is that method, modernized for 2026: current-events stories, proper mobile audio, and the one mechanic that matters — the pause.
